The load balancing for EV charging that’s a big Plus
NANOGRID™ LOCAL PLUS is an elegant solution to providing dynamic load balancing for sites with many electrical vehicle charging points – and the great news is that it is already built in to our CC3 charge point.
Dynamic load balancing automatically adjusts the power drawn by each charge point to prevent overloading in the local grid. It means you do not have to worry about the main fuse tripping and disrupting other devices and electrical systems at your property.
It also prioritises your most important electrical equipment to receive the power needed, which could be heating, cooling, refrigeration, industrial equipment or something else ahead of EV charging.
Just add an energy meter (provided by CTEK) at your electricity supply point and the CC3s communicate with the meter and each other via a Local Area Network (LAN). The communication protocol to the energy meter is Modbus TCP.
Having the energy meter and charging points on the same local LAN simplifies installation and is cost effective. The energy meter can also be shared by other power components in the installation.
And because the load balancing application is run on a charging point in the site, it doesn’t have to rely on a cloud based application which makes the solution more robust against internet communication problems.
NANOGRID™ LOCAL PLUS is suitable for installations where there is a risk for power outages due to overload, which may occur as soon the total power for the installed charging points and other electrical loads in the site exceeds the fuse rating of the site.
Installations of up to 25 dual outlet CC3 charge points can be managed by NANOGRID™ LOCAL PLUS, enough to charge 50 EVs. One of the CC3 charge points in the site acts as the controller unit, running the load balancing software based on a configuration that describes the power grid of the site and its limitations.
That configuration can be updated – and CTEK is always ready to help installers with this task – either remotely through a system’s back end or locally.
For sites with their own Energy Management System (EMS) the charging power of CC3 charging points can be directly controlled in real-time via Modbus TCP connection (between EMS and CC3). This is an alternative solution to CTEK NANOGRID.
