Winter camping: be fully prepared

Battery chargers

Camping in winter is a joy but also a challenge. Campsites are quieter, frost and snow transform the stunning scenery, and there is plenty of peace and solitude to be found. But preparing for your trip is all the more important in colder weather – including the vehicle you are travelling in.

Whether you are driving with a tent in your car or taking your campervan or motorhome into the wilderness, ensuring your vehicle is fully prepared will give you peace of mind and confidence for your winter adventure.

Breaking down in the colder months with their shorter days is not on anyone’s wish list for a trip away. So checking your vehicle before you set off is crucial.

Take charge of your preparation

One overlooked but critical element is your vehicle battery. It’s good practice to take care of your battery all year round by regularly connecting a battery charger. It is all the more important in cold weather and if your destination is remote.

If you are planning a winter camping trip, be sure to connect a charger such as CTEK’s NXT 15 at least 24 hours before you plan to depart. The NXT 15 will not only ensure a healthy battery is fully charged, it can alert you to any problems the battery is experiencing so you have time to replace it or run the charger’s Recond mode.

CTEK’s NXT Series models support 12V lead-acid and lithium batteries, and feature automatic spark-free operation, reverse polarity protection and CTEK’s hallmark connect-and-forget functionality. The NXT 15 provides 15A charging, so is ideal for the larger batteries in motorhomes.

Check your tyres for adequate tread and pressure (including your spare or your inflation kit), top up antifreeze and screen wash, and pack essentials such as snow chains, an ice scraper, a sturdy torch, warm blankets and a first aid kit. It's wise to have extra food and water, and a shovel in case you encounter deep snow.

Pack a boost

Another piece of kit that should be on your ‘must include’ checklist is a battery booster. If your battery has lost charge whilst you are camping you risk being stranded far from help and an electricity supply.

A pre-charged booster, such as CTEK’s RB 3000, can power new life into your battery wherever you are. The RB3000 provides up to 30 jump starts on a single 2.5 hour charge and is compact and lightweight enough to take everywhere. It is also very easy to use. Be sure to charge it up before you pack it into your vehicle for your camping trip.

The RB 3000 also operates as a low current power bank to power up your portable devices such as your phone, which could also be vital in an emergency. There’s also a multi-mode light for when darkness falls or you need to signal to other vehicles in an emergency.

Fully equipping your vehicle with a useful kit not only gives you peace of mind, it also allows you to fully embrace the freedom and beauty of the outdoors in winter.
